|Drug Name and Strength||Doxycycline 100mg/g|
|Indication||Treatment of infections caused by, or associated with, doxycycline susceptible organisms in dogs and cats, including skin infections such as pyoderma, folliculitis; respiratory infections such as tracheobronchitis, bronchitis and pneumonia; genitourinary infections such as cystitis and pyelonephritis; otitis externa and otitis media; gastrointestinal tract infections; osteomyelitis; puerperal infections.|
|Contraindications||The use of tetracyclines in young animals prior to the eruption of adult teeth may lead to permanent yellow staining of teeth. Avoid using doxycycline in pregnant animals in the last three weeks of pregnancy and in newborn animals during the first month of life.|
|Actions||Doxycycline is an advanced analogue of the tetracycline family of antibiotics with broad spectrum activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, including penicillinase producers and anaerobes, as well as Rickettsia, Chlamydia (Chlamydophila) and Mycoplasma. Activity has been demonstrated against a wide range of bacterial organisms including Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp., Escherichia coli, Pasteurella sp., Haemophilus sp., Clostridia sp., Listeria sp., Bacteroides sp., Bordetella sp., Klebsiella sp. and others.|
|Dosage and Administration||Give a loading dose of doxycycline 5 mg/kg bodyweight, then 2.5 mg/kg every twelve hours for two doses, then a maintenance dose of 2.5 mg/kg every 24 hours. Give in conjunction with or immediately following feeding. Each syringe graduation delivers 25 mg doxycycline.Therapy should be continued for five to seven days or for 48 hours after all symptoms have subsided. Some chronic or refractory cases may require longer therapy and the following durations are suggested guidelines. Chronic skin diseases. Ten to 20 days. Chronic cystitis. Ten to 28 days. Respiratory disease. Eight to ten days.|
