IndicationIntramammary infusion in acute or chronic bovine mastitis in lactating cows due to Staphylococci, Streptococci, coliform or Pseudomonas organisms; particularly effective against haemolytic Staphylococcus infections. It may be used during periods of noninfectious udder irritation to prevent bovine mastitis caused by the abovementioned organisms.
ActionsAntibacterial; broad spectrum antibiotic with short milk withholding period. Neomycin sulfate. This antibiotic exerts high antibacterial activity against coliform and Pseudomonas organisms as well as Staphylococcus. Studies have established that neomycin in therapeutic concentrations is nonirritating to mammary gland tissue.Clinical studies have shown that neomycin is effective in preventing growth of mastitis organisms in quarters that exhibit acute clinical symptoms of the disease. Novobiocin. Whereas antibiotics produced in actinomycetes are basic (e.g. streptomycin, erythromycin and neomycin) or amphoteric (e.g. the tetracyclines) in character, novobiocin is acidic, as is penicillin, and is stable under the degree of acidity or alkalinity found in body fluids.Novobiocin is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial infections, including those due to Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus haemolyticus, Strep. pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaris, Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella typhosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae. Novobiocin is especially effective in treating mastitis caused by Staph. aureus, including strains which have developed resistance to other antibiotics. Clinical studies also indicate novobiocin to be effective against mastitis caused by the fungus Nocardia asteroides. Novobiocin shows no cross resistance with penicillin, tetracycline, streptomycin or erythromycin and is bactericidal at about two times the minimal inhibitory concentration. Dihydrostreptomycin. An antibiotic derived from Streptomyces griseus, effective against infections caused by the Gram-negative organisms, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas, Pasteurella, Haemophilus and Klebsiella.
WarningsFor udder instillation of cattle only. Hazardous for human use. Discard empty containers; do not reuse. See also Withholding Periods.
Dosage and AdministrationAdminister 10 mL/infected quarter. A single infusion is generally sufficient but treatment may be repeated at 24 or 48 hour intervals if necessary.Clean and dry teat orifice thoroughly or apply 70% alcohol after milking out all four quarters. Warm container to body temperature and shake thoroughly. When using the plastet, remove the plastic cover from tip of syringe and, while holding teat firmly, insert tip into streak canal; then push plunger and inject entire contents. After instillation, massage the quarter to distribute the suspension up into the milk cistern.Do not milk the quarters for at least six hours after instillation; thereafter, milk the animal at regular intervals. No case of mastitis should be considered cured unless bacteriological examination of milk samples show the absence of causative microorganisms approximately three weeks after treatment.
StorageStore below 25°C (air conditioning). Protect from moisture.
