IndicationAid in the treatment of idiopathic epilepsy in dogs.
ContraindicationsDo not administer to dogs that have shown hypersensitivity to imepitoin or to dogs with severely impaired hepatic function, or severe renal or cardiovascular disorders.
ActionsImepitoin is an antiepileptic agent.
PrecautionsUse during reproduction, pregnancy or lactation should be based on a benefit-risk assessment by the veterinarian. Careful consideration should be given before deciding to switch a stabilised dog onto imepitoin from a different treatment. When transition between different antiepileptic therapies is medically required, this should be done gradually and with appropriate clinical supervision.Wash hands after use. Harmful if swallowed. Dosage and AdministrationGive orally at an initial dose rate of imepitoin 10 mg/kg bodyweight twice daily, approximately 12 hours apart. The dose can be increased up to 30 mg/kg bodyweight twice daily if required. Tablets can be administered with or without food, although studies suggest superior absorption in fasted dogs. The timing of tablet administration in relation to feeding should be kept consistent.The dose required will vary between dogs and will depend on the severity of the disorder. Each tablet can be halved for appropriate dosing according to the individual bodyweight of the dog. Use any divided tablet at the next administration time.Dosing guide. Initial treatment. Give twice daily. 5 kg bodyweight. Half a 100 mg tablet. 5.1 to 10 kg. One 100 mg tablet. 10.1 to 15 kg. One and a half 100 mg tablets. 15.1 to 20 kg. Half a 400 mg tablet. 20.1 to 40 kg. One 400 mg tablet. 40.1 to 60 kg. One and a half 400 mg tablets. > 60 kg. Two 400 mg tablets.If seizures are not adequately reduced after a minimum of one week of treatment at the current dose, the supervising veterinarian should reassess the dog. Assuming that Pexion is well tolerated by the dog, the dose can be increased by 50% to 100% increments up to a maximum dosage of 30 mg/kg bodyweight administered twice daily.
