|Drug Name and Strength||Omeprazole 370 mg/g|
|Indication||Treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers in horses and foals. By suppressing acid production, Omoguard creates a more neutral gastric environment which reduces ongoing damage to the gastric mucosa and also allows improved healing of existing damage. Omoguard is effective in horses in a variety of management conditions, including racing or showing, in horses and foals as young as 1 month of age. Omoguard can safely be administered to foals from 1 month of age and to stallions used for breeding.|
|Actions||Gastric acid suppressant for treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers in horses. Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor and suppresses gastric acid by specific inhibition of the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of the parietal cell. Omeprazole will block gastric acid secretion irrespective of the stimulus. Maximum acid suppression occurs after three to five days of treatment. Omoguard is formulated with an oil carrier base to protect the omeprazole from acid degradation in the stomach. The omeprazole becomes biologically available on passage to the alkaline intestinal environment, and is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream.|
|Warnings||When administering to competition horses, ensure that the regulations of relevant authorities are observed. Safety in pregnant or lactating mares has not been established.|
|Dosage and Administration||Set the adjustable dose syringe to the required volume and ensure the horse's mouth contains no feed prior to treatment. Place nozzle into the side of the mouth and deposit the paste in the side of the mouth far back into the pocket between the teeth and the cheek or over the back of the tongue. Immediately raise the horse's head for a few seconds after dosing to ensure the full dose has been swallowed. Observe the horse following dosing to ensure that no part of the dose is rejected. If any of the dose is lost, redosing is recommended. Replace the cap after each use and store the syringe on its side. Ulcer treatment. 4 mg/kg/day. Adult horse (600 kg) 6 mL (1 mL/100 kg) orally once daily for 28 days. Ulcer prevention. 1 mg/kg/day. Adult horse (600 kg) 1.5 mL (0.25 mL/100 kg) orally once daily for 28 days or longer. Long-term treatment at the preventative dose rate is recommended to avoid recurrence of gastric ulcers.|
