|Drug Name and Strength||Meloxicam 0.5 mg/mL|
|Indication||Alleviation of inflammation and pain in acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders such as discospondylosis, arthropathy and soft tissue injuries.|
|Contraindications||Administration to animals suffering from gastrointestinal disorders such as irritation and haemorrhage, impaired hepatic, cardiac or renal function, and haemorrhagic disorders or individual hypersensitivity to the product. Concurrent administration with steroidal or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, aminoglycoside antibiotics or anticoagulant agents. Concurrent administration of potentially nephrotoxic drugs should be avoided. This product is contraindicated in pregnant or lactating animals as no data have been established. This product is contraindicated for use in animals less than 6 weeks of age.|
|Actions||Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory compound of the oxicam group which acts by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. It exerts anti-inflammatory, antiexudative, analgesic and antipyretic effects, inhibits leukocyte infiltration into the inflamed tissue and prevents bone and cartilage destruction. To a minor extent it also inhibits collagen induced thrombocyte aggregation.|
|Precautions||The use of this product in debilitated aged animals may involve additional risk. If administration to such animals cannot be avoided, careful clinical management may be required. Pretreatment with anti-inflammatory drugs may result in additional or increased adverse effects, therefore a treatment free period with such drugs should be observed for at least 24 hours before commencement of meloxicam treatment. The treatment free period, however, should take into account the pharmacokinetic properties of the drugs used previously.Avoid use in dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive animals, as there is a potential risk of renal toxicity. Response to long-term therapy should be monitored at three monthly intervals, or more frequently as advised by the veterinarian. Metacam 0.5 mg/mL Oral Suspension for Cats should not be used following parenteral injection of meloxicam or any other NSAID, as appropriate dose regimens for such follow up treatments has not been established.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.|
|Dosage and Administration||Shake well before use. Mix with food or give directly into the mouth at meal times. Initial treatment is a single dose of meloxicam 0.1 mg/kg bodyweight on the first day. Treatment is to be continued once daily by oral administration (at 24 hour intervals) at a maintenance dose of meloxicam 0.05 mg/kg bodyweight. For longer term treatment, once clinical response has been observed (within seven days), the dose of Metacam can be adjusted to the lowest effective individual dose, reflecting that the degree of pain and inflammation associated with chronic musculoskeletal disorders may vary over time.Particular care should be taken with the accuracy of dosing. The recommended dose should not be exceeded and the instructions of the veterinarian followed with care. Single initial dose. 0.1 mg/kg bodyweight (6 drops/kg; two maintenance dose volumes). Maintenance dose. 0.05 mg/kg (3 drops/kg bodyweight).A clinical response is normally seen within seven days. Treatment should be discontinued after 14 days at the latest if no clinical improvement is apparent.|
|Storage||Store below 25°C (air conditioning). 3 mL pack. Discard unused product 14 days after initial use. 15 mL, 30 mL packs. Discard six months after initial use when stored below 25°C (air conditioning).|
