|Indication||Alleviation of inflammation and pain in acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders.|
|Contraindications||Administration to lactating bitches or pregnant bitches in the last one-third of pregnancy, administration to dogs less than 6 weeks of age or less than 4 kg bodyweight, or administration to animals suffering from gastrointestinal disorders such as irritation and haemorrhage, impaired hepatic, cardiac or renal function, and haemorrhagic disorders or individual hypersensitivity to the product.|
|Actions||Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory compound of the oxicam group which acts by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. It exerts anti-inflammatory, antiexudative, analgesic and antipyretic effects, inhibits leukocyte infiltration into the inflamed tissue and prevents bone and cartilage destruction. To a minor extent it also inhibits collagen induced thrombocyte aggregation.|
|Precautions||Metacam should not be administered concurrently with steroidal or other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, aminoglycoside antibiotics or anticoagulant agents. Pretreatment with anti-inflammatory drugs may result in additional or increased adverse effects, so a treatment free period with such drugs should be observed for at least 24 hours before commencement with Metacam. The treatment free period, however, should take into account the pharmacokinetic properties of the drugs used previously. Avoid use in dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive animals as there is potential risk of increased renal toxicity.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. |Dosage and Administration||Initial treatment. Give a single dose of meloxicam 0.2 mg/kg bodyweight on the first day, which can be given orally, or alternatively, via Metacam injectable solution for dogs and cats.Maintenance dose. Treatment is to be continued once daily by oral administration (at 24 hour intervals) of a maintenance dose of meloxicam 0.1 mg/kg bodyweight. Each chewable tablet contains meloxicam 1 mg or 2.5 mg, which corresponds to the daily maintenance dose for a dog weighing 10 kg or 25 kg respectively. Each chewable tablet can be halved for accurate dosing according to the bodyweight of the animal and can be administered with or without food. 4 to 7 kg bodyweight. Half a 1 mg tablet. 7.1 to 10 kg. 1 x 1 mg tablet. 10.1 to 15 kg. 1½ x 1 mg tablet. 15.1 to 20 kg. 2 x 1 mg tablet. 20.1 to 25 kg. 1 x 2.5 mg tablet. 25.1 to 35 kg. 1½ x 2.5 mg tablet. 35.1 to 50 kg. 2 x 2.5 mg tablet.If no improvement is noticeable after 10 days of treatment, discontinue use and consult a veterinary surgeon.|
