|Drug Name and Strength||Meloxicam 20mg/mL|
|Indication||Cattle. For reduction of pain associated with surgery. For use in acute respiratory infection and diarrhoea in combination with appropriate antibiotic therapy to reduce clinical symptoms in calves and young cattle. For use in acute mastitis, in combination with antibiotic therapy, as appropriate, to reduce clinical symptoms in lactating cows. For use to assist in the control of pain following the dehorning of cattle particularly that following heat cautery dehorning of young cattle. It is recommended that the injection be administered approximately 10 minutes before dehorning and be accompanied by cornual nerve block anaesthesia. Pigs. Acute noninfectious locomotor disorders to reduce the symptoms of lameness and inflammation. In puerperal septicaemia and toxaemia (mastitis-metritis-agalactia syndrome) with appropriate antibiotic therapy to reduce clinical signs of inflammation, oppose the effects of endotoxins and hasten recovery. Horses. Single dose rapid initiation of therapy of musculoskeletal disorders and relief of pain associated with colic. Sheep. For single dose use in sheep and lambs 14 days of age or older for the alleviation of pain and inflammation.|
|Contraindications||Administration to animals with haemorrhagic gastrointestinal disorders, impaired hepatic, cardiac or renal function, and haemorrhagic disorders, or where there is evidence of individual hypersensitivity to the product.|
|Actions||Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) of the oxicam class which acts by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, thereby exerting anti-inflammatory, antiendotoxic, antiexudative, analgesic and antipyretic properties.|
|Precautions||Pigs. Safe use in pregnant sows has not been fully evaluated but preliminary studies suggest that it has no harmful effects in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. This product can be used in lactating sows. Horses. The safety of this product in pregnant or lactating horses and in horses of under 6 weeks of age has not been established. Sheep. The safety of this product in lambs less than 14 days of age has not been established.The product should not be used concurrently with glucocorticosteroids, other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or with anticoagulant agents. The product should be used with caution in conjunction with other highly protein bound drugs. Repeat treatments (more than once in cattle; more than twice in pigs), higher doses, or injection of the product into the muscle could result in residues above the maximum residue limits (MRLs) unless the label withholding period is extended. |Dosage and Administration||Cattle. Single use only. For single subcutaneous or intravenous injection. Give meloxicam 0.5 mg/kg bodyweight (2.5 mL/100 kg bodyweight) in combination with antibiotic therapy, as appropriate. Pigs. Single intramuscular injection in the anterior half of the neck. (Can be repeated once after 24 hours if necessary.) Meloxicam 0.4 mg/kg bodyweight (2 mL/100 kg bodyweight) in combination with antibiotic therapy as appropriate. Sheep. Single use only by subcutaneous injection high on the neck behind the ear. For sheep and lambs from 14 days of age. Meloxicam 1.0 mg/kg bodyweight (1.0 mL/20 kg bodyweight). Horses. Single use only by intravenous injection. Meloxicam 0.6 mg/kg bodyweight (3 mL/100 kg bodyweight). Metacam Oral for Horses may be used for continuation of treatment, beginning after 24 hours.|
|Storage||Store below 25°C (air conditioning). Not to be used after 28 days of opening.|
