|Drug Name and Strength||Meloxicam 1.5 mg/mL|
|Indication||Treat inflammation and provide analgesia for acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders in dogs.|
|Contraindications||Do not use in animals with cardiac, hepatic or clinical renal disease, or when there is suspicion of gastrointestinal bleeding, ulceration, haemorrhagic disorder or individual hypersensitivity to the product. Do not administer to pregnant bitches in the last trimester, or to lactating bitches. Do not administer concurrently with corticosteroids, other NSAIDs, aminoglycoside antibiotics or anticoagulant agents.|
|Actions||Meloxicam is a cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 sparing member of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) family. These compounds act by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. Inhibition of leukocyte infiltration of inflamed tissue and inhibition of bone and cartilage destruction also occur. To a lesser extent, there is also inhibition of collagen induced thrombocyte aggregation. Meloxicam exerts anti-inflammatory, anti-exudative, analgesic and antipyretic effects.Oral absorption is almost 100%, and the compound is almost 100% protein bound, resulting in a peak plasma concentration at around 7.5 hours when given orally. There is significant enterohepatic recirculation. Highest concentrations are found in kidney and liver with lower levels in skeletal muscles and fat. It provides once daily dosing and is not affected by food. There is no effect on bleeding. Meloxicam undergoes extensive hepatic metabolism into a number of metabolites that are excreted in both urine and faeces (about 75% in the dog).|
|Precautions||Use in animals under 6 weeks of age, or in debilitated or aged animals may involve an additional risk. If use cannot be avoided, careful clinical management may be necessary. Meloxicam can result in typical adverse reactions associated with NSAIDs, including loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, melaena or occult faecal blood, and lethargy. Symptomatic treatment may be necessary. In most cases, gastrointestinal side effects are transient and disappear after termination of treatment; however, in rare cases they may be serious. Owners should be advised to discontinue therapy and contact their veterinarian if signs of intolerance are observed.Meloxicam may displace or be displaced by other highly protein bound drugs, including warfarin and phenylbutazone, and may antagonise the antihypertensive effects of angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. Use caution with treating animals with significant liver or kidney disease.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.|
