|Drug Name and Strength||Meloxicam 30mg/ml|
|Indication||Inflammation and pain in acute and chronic musculoskeletal disorders in horses.|
|Contraindications||Administration to animals suffering from gastrointestinal disorders such as irritation and haemorrhage, impaired hepatic, cardiac or renal function and haemorrhagic disorders, or when there is evidence of individual hypersensitivity to the product. Administration to pregnant or lactating mares. Not to be used in food producing species.|
|Actions||Meloxicam is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) derived from oxicam, and acts by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis, exerting anti-inflammatory, antiexudative, analgesic and antipyretic effects. Meloxicam reduces leukocyte infiltration in the inflamed tissue. To a minor extent it also inhibits collagen induced thrombocyte aggregation. Meloxicam also has antiendotoxic properties because it has been shown to inhibit production of thromboxane B2 induced by intravenous Escherichia coli endotoxin administration in calves and pigs.|
|Precautions||Administration concurrently with glucocorticoids or other NSAIDs or anticoagulant agents should be avoided. Product interactions with Ilium Meloxicam 30 Anti-inflammatory Suspension for Horses have not been studied. Avoid use in dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive animals, as there is a risk of increased renal toxicity.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. |Dosage and Administration||Shake well before use. Avoid contamination during use. Discard six months after initial broaching when stored below 30°C (room temperature). Horses. 0.6 mg/kg bodyweight (1 mL suspension/50 kg) once daily for up to 14 days, or as directed by the veterinarian. Administer by oral syringe directly over the back of the tongue. Draw an accurate volume of suspension from the tube using the syringe supplied, place the syringe nozzle into the side of the horse's mouth and deposit suspension as far back over the tongue as possible.|
