|Drug Name and Strength||lignocaine as HCl(17.2mg/mL)|
|Indication||Local and regional anaesthesia in horses, cattle, dogs and cats. Treatment of ventricular arrhythmias in dogs.|
|Contraindications||Animals with conduction disturbances of the heart, hypovolaemia, bradycardia, cardiac decompensation, or hypotension not due to treatable tachyarrhythmias. Animals with known hypersensitivity to lignocaine.|
|Actions||Local and regional anaesthetic. Lignocaine works by affecting the nerve cell membrane's permeability to sodium ions, thus blocking nerve impulse transmission. All nerves are affected but those concerned with pain and temperature are most sensitive. Onset of action is rapid when given by injection.|
|Precautions||Use with care in any heart condition not already contraindicated. Lignocaine is metabolised by the liver; give with caution to animals with hepatic insufficiency. Plasma half-life of lignocaine may be prolonged where hepatic blood flow is reduced. Use with caution in pregnant, very young or very old animals.|
|Dosage and Administration||Surface anaesthesia. Dogs, cats: 1 to 2 mL. Horses, cattle: 10 to 20 mL. Regional anaesthesia. Dogs, cats: 1 to 3 mL. Horses, cattle: 10 to 12 mL. Epidural anaesthesia. Dogs, cats: up to 1 mL/5 kg. Horses, cattle: 10 to 15 mL. Ventricular tachycardia in the presence of congestive heart failure. Dogs: 1 to 2 mg/kg bodyweight as an intravenous bolus to a total dose of 4 mg/kg or until toxic effects (emesis, depression, seizures) are noted; if the arrhythmia is controlled, continue as intravenous infusion at 40 to 80 microgram/kg/minute.|
