More Information
Drug Name and StrengthOestriol 1 mg/tablet
Quantity30 Tablets
IndicationAid in the treatment of hormone responsive urinary incontinence due to sphincter mechanism incompetence in ovariohysterectomised bitches.
ContraindicationsDo not use in intact bitches, as efficacy has only been established in ovariohysterectomised bitches. Animals showing polyuria–polydipsia should not be treated with Incurin.
ActionsOestriol is a naturally occurring short acting oestrogen with high affinity for receptors in the cells of the lower genitourinary tract. Oestriol works to control urinary incontinence in spayed bitches by restoring the normal tone of the urethral sphincter muscle, improving the urodynamic function of the bladder and restoring the urethral epithelium. Oestriol also increases the sensitivity of the genitourinary tract to α-adrenergic stimulation, hence improving the response to sympathetic nervous stimulation or sympathomimetic drugs. Oestriol has a short receptor occupancy time. After oral administration of multiple doses no treatment accumulation occurs. In the target animal safety study and the clinical trials, including long-term treatment, no signs of bone marrow suppression were observed. This is probably due to the short-acting oestrogenic character of oestriol.
PrecautionsUse with caution in animals with liver disease.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Phone Australia 131 126.Disposal Dispose of empty container by wrapping with paper and putting in garbage.
Dosage and AdministrationStart treatment with 1 tablet per animal once daily for seven days. If there is a good response to treatment, the dose can be reduced to ½ a tablet once daily. If treatment is not successful increase the dose to 2 tablets once daily for seven days. No more than 2 tablets per animal per day should be used. If no response to treatment occurs, the diagnosis should be re-evaluated. Once the daily dose of ½, 1 or 2 tablets has been established, treatment every second or third day can be tried.
