|Drug Name and Strength||Clomipramine hydrochloride 20mg|
|Indication||Treatment of stereotypic behaviours (obsessive–compulsive disorders) in dogs such as acral lick dermatitis, excessive grooming and tail chasing. Aid in the treatment of anxiety disorders such as destructiveness, excessive vocalisation and loss of toilet control, associated with separation anxiety, and in the treatment of urine spraying in desexed and female cats (5 mg tablet) in combination with behavioural modification.|
|Actions||Clomipramine and its major metabolite, desmethylclomipramine, act in vivo to block the neuronal reuptake of noradrenaline and serotonin (5-HT). In this way, the broad spectrum activity of Clomav Tablets combines the properties of a tricyclic antidepressant and a serotonin reuptake inhibitor.|
|Precautions||From the known mechanism of action, it is recommended to use Clomav Tablets with care in dogs or cats with cardiac arrhythmias, epilepsy or narrow angle glaucoma. Due to the potential for anticholinergic effects, Clomav Tablets should also be used with care in dogs and cats with a known predisposition to developing urinary tract obstruction or urinary retention. Clomav Tablets are not recommended for treatment of aggression, or for treating a dog or cat for the above indicated behaviours where that animal has a history or predisposition to aggressive behaviour. The efficacy and safety of clomipramine hydrochloride tablets has not been established in dogs and cats weighing less than 1.25 kg or less than six months of age. Clomipramine hydrochloride is metabolised by hepatic glucuronidation and as cats use this pathway less efficiently than dogs, special care must be taken when prescribing Clomav 5 mg Tablets to cats. Use during pregnancy and lactation. The safety of clomipramine hydrochloride tablets has not been established in breeding or lactating dogs or cats. Clomav Tablets are recommended for use in breeding dogs and cats only if the benefit:risk ratio is considered justified by the veterinarian.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre.
