More Information
Drug Name and StrengthClavulanic acid 12.5 mg/mL (as potassium clavulanate),
Amoxycillin 50 mg/mL (as amoxycillin trihydrate)
Quantity15ml Bottle
IndicationDiseases of cats and dogs including skin diseases (including deep and superficial pyodermas), urinary tract infections, respiratory diseases (involving upper and lower respiratory tract), enteritis.
ContraindicationsAdministration to small herbivores, e.g. rabbits or guinea pigs. History of allergic reactions to penicillins.
ActionsResistance to many antibiotics is caused by β-lactamase enzymes which destroy the antibiotic before it can act on the bacteria. The clavulanate counteracts this defence mechanism by inactivating the β-lactamases, thus rendering the organisms sensitive to amoxycillin's rapid bactericidal effect at concentrations readily attainable in the body. In vitro, Clavulox is active against a wide range of clinically important bacteria, including Gram-positive: Staphylococci (including β-lactamase producing strains), Corynebacteria, Streptococci; Gram-negative: Escherichia coli (including β-lactamase producing strains), Bordetella bronchiseptica, Proteus mirabilis, Salmonella sp. (including β-lactamase producing strains), Pasteurella and Klebsiella.Clavulox is not indicated for cases involving Pseudomonas sp.
WarningsCaution is advised in use in very small herbivores.
Dosage and AdministrationAdd 14 mL water and shake vigorously. Refrigerate reconstituted suspension at 2 to 8°C. Discard any unused suspension after 10 days. For oral administration only. Shake well before use.Standard dose rate. 12.5 mg/kg (i.e. 1 mL/5 kg) bodyweight twice daily is recommended. In refractory cases, particularly those of the respiratory tract, 25 mg/kg twice daily has shown improved cure rates. For the accurate dosing of particularly small animals note that 1 drop from the dropper provided contains approximately 2.5 mg Clavulox; i.e. standard dose: 5 drops/kg twice daily.Duration of therapy. In routine cases involving all indications continue therapy for five to seven days or for 48 hours after all symptoms have subsided. In chronic or refractory cases where there is considerable tissue damage, a longer course of therapy may be required allowing sufficient time for damaged tissue to repair. Based on clinical trials, the following durations are suggested as guidelines. Chronic skin disease: ten to 20 days; chronic cystitis: ten to 28 days; respiratory disease: eight to ten days.
