IndicationBaytril Otic is indicated as a treatment for acute and chronic canine otitis externa complicated by bacterial and fungal pathogens susceptible to enrofloxacin and/or silver sulfadiazine. In clinical trials, Baytril Otic demonstrated elimination or reduction of clinical signs associated with otitis externa and/or in vitro susceptibility to cultured pathogens. Baytril Otic is effective when used as a treatment for canine otitis externa associated with one or more of the following organisms: Malassezia pachydermatis, coagulase positive Staphylococcus sp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter sp., Proteus mirabilis, Aeromonas hydrophila, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Candida albicans, Enterococcus sp. Group D, Escherichia coli and coagulase negative Staphylococcus sp. In these trials Baytril Otic showed a lesser, but still useful, success rate (36%) against Aspergillus sp.
ContraindicationsAdministration to dogs with known hypersensitivity to quinolones and/or sulfonamides.
ActionsBaytril Otic provides antimicrobial coverage against the microbial pathogens (bacteria, yeast and fungi) commonly encountered in cases of acute and chronic canine otitis externa. Baytril Otic is nonsteroidal yet soothing; silver sulfadiazine is known to promote re-epithelialisation and facilitate healing. The active ingredients are delivered in a physiological carrier (a nonirritating emulsion) which does not contribute to canal maceration.Microbiology Enrofloxacin is a bactericidal fluoroquinolone antimicrobial, with activity against a broad spectrum of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. Fluoroquinolones act by irreversibly inhibiting DNA-gyrase, an enzyme in the bacterial cell nucleus essential for metabolic processes and the transmission of genetic material. The ultimate outcome of the fluoroquinolone intervention is DNA fragmentation and bacterial cell death.Silver sulfadiazine (SSD) has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial activity. In addition to being bactericidal for Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, it also is an effective antimycotic. SSD uses two mechanisms to suppress microbial growth: inhibition of DNA replication and modification of the cell membrane.
WarningsFor use in companion animals when culture and sensitivity testing indicates no suitable alternatives.
PrecautionsThe use of Baytril Otic in dogs with perforated tympanic membranes has not been evaluated. Therefore, the integrity of the tympanic membrane should be evaluated before administering this product. If hearing or vestibular dysfunction is noted during the course of treatment, discontinue use of Baytril Otic.Topical administration of Baytril Otic to an exudate and debris free canal will generally result in local antimicrobial concentrations which greatly exceed serum and tissue levels resulting from systemic therapy. Therefore, when using Baytril Otic as a treatment for canine otitis externa, interpret susceptibility data cautiously.Disposal Dispose of empty container by wrapping with paper and putting in garbage.
Dosage and AdministrationShake well before using. Administer a sufficient quantity of Baytril Otic to coat the aural lesions and the external auditory canal. Treat twice daily, for up to 14 days. Dogs < 16 kg. 5 to 10 drops/treatment. Dogs > 16 kg. 10 to 15 drops/treatment.Following treatment, gently massage the ear to ensure complete and uniform distribution of the medication throughout the external ear canal. The precise duration of treatment varies and is dependent on the specific factors in each case. Periodic re-evaluation and subsequent adjustment of the treatment course is recommended. In chronic or recurrent cases, concurrent systemic therapy with enrofloxacin (based on the sensitivity of the pathogens) is advised, in addition to topical treatment.
