|Drug Name and Strength||Pentosan polysulfate sodium 250 mg/mL|
|Quantity||12 x 6ml Bottles|
|Indication||An aid in the treatment of noninfectious inflammatory joint disease in horses. Osteoarthritis, especially conditions affecting multiple joints; osteochondrosis dissecans; traumatic joint and periarticular inflammation in horses.|
|Contraindications||Do not use in animals with clotting defects, traumatic haemorrhage, infection or liver or kidney failure.|
|Actions||Pentosan polysulfate is a semisynthetic polysaccharide polymer that possesses anti-inflammatory, antiarthritic and chondroprotective properties. These beneficial effects arise from direct anti-inflammatory activity; inhibition of neutrophil migration into joints; stimulation of hyaluronic acid synthesis by synovial fibroblasts which results in a marked increase in synovial volume and viscosity; stimulation of chondrocytes and the biosynthesis of proteoglycans; strong fibrinolytic activity which improves the circulation of subchondral bone and periarticular structures.|
|Warnings||Pentosan polysulfate has anticoagulant properties. Blood is the most usual cause of sudden inflammatory swelling following intra-articular injection. Even a small amount may be reactive. Owners should be advised that a transitory swelling may occur in approximately 5% of cases and that the action of Arthropen Vet 250 Injection is unaffected by this complication.|
|Precautions||Any blood vessel, even a small one, will bleed more freely and for longer if a track of pentosan polysulfate is left as the needle is withdrawn. Hence the advice that, when injected intra-articularly, the needle should be ‘washed’ with joint fluid before withdrawal.|
|Dosage and Administration||Intra-articular injection. 1 mL injections may be repeated once weekly for three to four injections. More than one joint may be treated at a time. Prepare the site as for surgery, avoiding iodine based skin preparations. Use a neutral, soapless skin cleanser. Prepare vial seal and withdraw chosen dosage aseptically into a sterile syringe. A 22 gauge noncutting needle is suitable for injection. Introduce into the joint space with steady even pressure. Allow approximately 1 to 2 mL of synovial fluid to escape according to the intended dosage volume. Draw back once or twice and mix Arthropen Vet 250 Injection and the joint fluid within the joint. Apply a firm elastic bandage around the joint for three to four hours after injection. Intramuscular injection. 3 mg/kg (6 mL vial/500 kg horse) on four occasions with and interval of five to seven days between injections. If used in performance animals, the regulations of the relevant authorities regarding medication should be observed.|
|Storage||Store between 2 and 8°C. (Refrigerate. Do not freeze.) Protect from light. Shelf life: 24 months.|
