IndicationTreatment of infected wounds, abscesses, dental infections and osteomyelitis caused by susceptible anaerobic (Gram-positive and Gram-negative) and aerobic (Gram-positive) bacteria in dogs and cats.
ContraindicationsHistory of hypersensitivity to clindamycin or lincomycin. Administration to rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, horses or ruminants.
ActionsClindamycin is a derivative of lincomycin, with more pronounced activity against anaerobic bacteria and some Gram-positive pathogens. It is, however, cross resistant with lincomycin and should not be used concurrently with erythromycin.Microbiology Clindamycin is active against aerobic bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus sp. and Streptococcus sp., and against anaerobic bacteria, including Bacteroides sp., Fusobacterium sp., Actinomyces sp., Peptostreptococcus sp., Propionibacterium sp. and some Clostridium sp.
WarningsUse with caution in animals receiving neuromuscular blocking agents.Safety in pregnant bitches or queens, or breeding male dogs or cats has not been established.
PrecautionsOvergrowth of nonsusceptible organisms, particularly yeasts, can occur; treat superinfection appropriately. During prolonged therapy of one month or more, periodic liver and kidney function tests and blood counts should be performed. Animals with severe renal and/or very severe hepatic disturbances accompanied by severe metabolic aberrations should be monitored by serum examination during high dose clindamycin therapy.
