Milbemycin oxime, praziquantel and lufenuron are the active ingredients in Sentinel Spectrum Tasty Chews.

Milbemycin oxime interferes with nerve transmission in invertebrates, which helps protect against heartworm, roundworm, hookworm and whipworm (minimum dose rate: 0.5mg/kg).

Praziquantel causes muscle spasm in tapeworm, which are then attacked by enzymes and disintegrate (minimum dose rate: 5mg/kg). It kills all intestinal forms of tapeworm except Spirometra spp, which require a higher than standard dose rate.

Lufenuron is an insect growth regulator that interrupts the flea breeding cycle. Adult fleas that feed on an animal treated with Sentinel Spectrum will produce eggs or larvae that do not develop to the adult stage. Therefore reducing the number of fleas in the environment.

Sentinel Spectrum Tasty Chews are beef-flavoured, and studies have shown they are so palatable that 97% of dogs accept them straight from the hand.

Indications

Sentinel Spectrum Tasty Chews provide broad spectrum parasite protection.

Sentinel Spectrum Tasty Chews prevent heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) and control roundworm (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum), whipworm (Trichuris vulpis), tapeworm and flea infestations in dogs.

Dosage and Administration

Once a month, ideally on the same date.

If a dose is overdue by >15 days, treat immediately and resume monthly dosing.

If a dose is missed by 15-30 days, heartworm prevention can be maintained if treated immediately and monthly dosing resumes for at least the next 2 months.

If a dose is missed by >60 days, a veterinarian must be consulted in case the animal has contracted heartworm. Dosing may be recommenced, and a blood test for adult heartworm must be performed after 6 months.

Dose must be given with a full meal, either within food or immediately afterwards (to allow effective absorption of lufenuron).

Sentinel Spectrum Tasty Chews have been safety tested at up to 10 times the recommended dose.

If an animal with adult heartworm infection (and therefore circulating microfilariae) is given Sentinel Spectrum, a transient shock-like reaction can occur. To avoid this, dogs should be tested for adult heartworm and treated if necessary, before starting Sentinel Spectrum.

IndicationMonthly treatment prevents heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) infection; controls adult roundworm (Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonina), immature roundworm (Toxocara canis), adult whipworm (Trichuris vulpis), adult hookworm (Ancylostoma caninum), adult tapeworm (Echinococcus granulosus, Taenia pisiformis and Dipylidium caninum), provides long term protection and control of flea (Ctenocephalides felis) infestations, and forms part of a treatment strategy for flea allergy dermatitis in dogs. Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD). The most important part of the treatment of FAD is preventing flea bites. Lufenuron reduces the number of fleas in the pet's environment to a negligible level. Treatment with lufenuron for several months has been shown to dramatically improve the clinical signs of FAD in dogs.
ActionsMilbemycin oxime prevents heartworm and controls gastrointestinal nematodes. Milbemycin oxime increases nematode membrane permeability to chloride ions via glutamate gated chloride ion channels, leading to flaccid paralysis and death of the parasite. Lufenuron inhibits the development of flea eggs and larvae by interfering with the synthesis of chitin, the principal component of the arthropod exoskeleton, thus interrupting the flea life cycle. Praziquantel controls tapeworms by modifying the permeability of their membranes to calcium, inducing damage to the membranes and resulting in the death of the parasite.
WarningsDogs should be tested and be free from both adult heartworm and microfilariae before starting on preventative treatment with Sentinel Spectrum.
PrecautionsSentinel Spectrum provides a wide margin of safety in dogs when used according to label directions. Milbemycin oxime combined with lufenuron has been tested in over 75 different breeds of dogs, including pregnant females, breeding males and females, and puppies. Satisfactory margins of safety have been demonstrated for both milbemycin oxime and praziquantel when administered during all reproductive phases.First Aid If poisoning occurs, contact a doctor or Poisons Information Centre. Dosage and AdministrationPrevention of heartworm, control of intestinal worms and fleas. Treat with Sentinel Spectrum Tasty Chews every month, preferably on the same date each month. Give chew with a full meal. Very small dogs (< 4 kg). Give 1 chew from brown pack. Small dogs (4 to 11 kg). Give 1 chew from green pack. Medium dogs (11 to 22 kg). Give 1 chew from yellow pack. Large dogs (22 to 45 kg). Give 1 chew from blue pack. Very large dogs (> 45 kg). Dose with the appropriate combination of chews according to bodyweight. Puppies. Treatment should start at 6 weeks of age. The minimum worming treatments recommended are at 2, 4, 8 and 12 weeks. When worming puppies of less than 6 weeks of age Milbemax Dog is an ideal choice. Growing puppies may gain sufficient weight during the course of treatment to require an increased dose of Sentinel Spectrum. Pregnant bitches. Treat at mating and then every month. Ensure there is a treatment prior to whelping.Missed dose protection. If a regular monthly treatment is missed by 15 days or less, administer Sentinel Spectrum immediately and resume monthly dosing schedule. If a dose is missed by 15 to 30 days, heartworm prevention can be maintained if the dog is dosed immediately and then maintained on regular monthly dosing for the next two months. If a period of more than 60 days has elapsed since the last dose, veterinary consultation is recommended.Integrated flea control. For best results, give Sentinel Spectrum throughout the year without interruption. Ensure all dogs and cats within the household are given a flea preventative. Sentinel Spectrum does not kill adult fleas. If a high adult flea burden is present at the start of treatment with Sentinel Spectrum, administer a product registered for use against adult fleas until the adult flea population is reduced. Initially, treatment of the pet's environment may also be recommended for severe flea infestations.
